i told you so

I Told You So is a short montage of video segments cut from American 8mm home movies circa 1960-1970; the visuals are accompanied and mirrored by the voice of former American President John F. Kennedy.

This project was about as close to ‘art experimental’ as I get, and is a refelction of my feelings towards the current ’state of the union’ in the US, as well as in my own homeland of Canada. I wanted to contrast the speeches of JFK warning the population about the future, cautioning us about sustainability, and preparing for the new frontier.

Albeit I edited the speeches of President JFK together to produce a constant dialog relevant to the topic of preparing for the future, however the content itself remains unedited. The purpose was to create a loose dialog on the 2009 economic struggle using visuals and quotes from a similar period in modern history.

The title “I Told You so” was supposed to be an ironic cheap shot at the baby boomers. The video illustrates that fair warning and consideration was given nearly 50years ago, yet still society continued on its path of consumerism. Today we the future is less certain and the stuggle ahead of us seemingly unsurmountable, and all that I can think to say (putting myself in teh shoes of JFK) is “I told you so!
